About Mic & Mix
A home recording gear site for people who already own the entry-level kit and are trying to work out which single weakness to fix next.
Who this is for
You own a USB microphone, or an entry-level interface, or a pair of budget monitors. You know what a cardioid pattern is and roughly what phantom power does. What you do not know is which of your five components is actually holding you back, and every review site you read wants to sell you a microphone.
That is the gap this site exists to fill. Most of our pages are organized around a decision rather than a product category, and several of them conclude that you should not buy the thing you came looking for. The most useful sentence we can write is “your interface is fine — the problem is your room”, and it is the one nobody selling gear ever writes.
Who writes it
Ryder M. — the hands-on owner behind Magoo Media Group, which publishes this site. Every article, comparison and roundup here carries that byline, because a site that recommends purchases should have a named person accountable for the recommendation.
What we will not do is inflate that. There is no audio engineering credential behind this site, no test lab, no team of reviewers, and no claim to years of professional studio work. If you see a site asserting those things without naming them specifically, treat it the way you would treat any unverifiable claim.
What we do, and do not, claim
We do claim: that every numeric specification on this site came from a published manufacturer source or an independent measurement, that the source link is next to the number so you can check it, and that our scores follow a rubric published in full.
We do not claim: to have tested these products. We have not. There is no anechoic chamber, no measurement rig and no shelf of review units behind this site, and pretending otherwise would be the easiest lie for a competitor to falsify. Where a judgment is editorial rather than measured, we say so.
We do not publish prices. Prices render only from a live data layer and expire after 48 hours, so you will never read a figure here that was true last quarter. Where there is no verified price, the button says “check price” rather than showing a number we cannot stand behind.
We do not publish reviews or testimonials. Not paraphrased, not composed, not “representative”. If you ever see a customer quote on this site, something has gone wrong.
How the site is organized
Five hubs, one per link in the recording chain, because that is the order in which problems actually get diagnosed.
- Microphones — Dynamic or condenser, and how much gain each one will demand from the interface you already own.
- Audio Interfaces & Preamps — Ranked on published gain first, because the gain figure is what decides whether your microphone choice works.
- Monitors & Headphones — What you mix on decides every decision you make. Ranked on the specs that tell you what a small room can honestly reproduce.
- Acoustic Treatment — Ranked on published absorption at 125 Hz, because that is where small rooms go wrong and NRC does not measure it.
- Studio Setup & Accessories — The physical rig, and the upgrade path that tells you which link to fix next rather than which product to buy.
If you do not know where to start, the upgrade path begins from a symptom rather than a product.
How we are funded
Through Amazon Associates commissions on purchases made via links here, at no extra cost to you. That creates an obvious incentive problem, which is why the editorial policy and the affiliate disclosure are written as plainly as we can manage. The short version: we rank on our published criteria, we recommend the cheaper option when it is the better buy, and several pages here tell you to spend your money in a different category entirely.
Corrections
If a specification on this site is wrong, we want to know and we will fix it and say that we did. Email contact@micandmix.com or use the contact form. A specification correction with a source is the most useful message you can send us.
